About the Program

The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is pleased to offer a one-year fellowship in Orthopedic Spine Surgery. This fellowship offers an outstanding diversity of experience in all areas of adult and adolescent spine surgery, including degenerative, tumor, infection, trauma, and deformity reconstruction of the spine.

The curriculum includes an optional rotation with the orthopedic pediatric service, focusing on spine adolescent idiopathic scoliosis for the rotating fellow. Mentorship is a strong tradition for clinical, academic, and research growth of our fellows.

The fellowship includes exposure to a wide variety of spine surgical techniques, including:

  • Foundational training in spinal instrumentation, correction, and decompression from skull to sacrum
  • Total disc arthroplasty, laminoplasty, spinal fusion, and other treatments for degenerative spine conditions
  • Minimally invasive and open surgical techniques
  • Osteotomies of the spine for deformity correction
  • Treatment of spinal tumors and infections
  • Current approaches for complex spinal reconstruction including anterior and lateral-based procedures.

How to Apply

Our Spine Fellowship participates in the online application and match process through the AO Spine/NASS (North American Spine Society). This is facilitated by the SF Match service. Learn more about the match process and the application.

Applications will be reviewed each fall and invitations for interviews sent in the winter each year.
