University of Iowa Sports Medicine hosted the 38th annual University of Iowa Sports

Brain Wolf Sports Symp.

Medicine Symposium Dec. 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Coralville, Iowa.

The symposium, founded in 1984 by John Albright, MD, has established a long tradition of bringing the best and brightest to the Iowa City area. This conference attracts world leaders in sports medicine as attendees and guest speakers, including Aseesh Bedi, MD, from the University of Michigan; Brett Owens, MD, from Brown University; Christopher Larson, MD, from Twin Cities Orthopedics; Jay Albright, MD, from Children’s Hospital Colorado; and Charles Bush-Joseph, MD, from Rush University in Chicago, just to name a few.

This year, we were once again fortunate to have three very impressive guest faculty speakers: Benjamin Ma, MD, professor-in-residence in sports medicine and vice chair of adult clinical operations at the University of California-San Francisco; Alison Brooks, MD, MPH, associate professor, and primary care sports medicine physician from the University of Wisconsin; and Kory Zimney, PT, DPT, PhD, associate professor, and sports physical therapist from the University of South Dakota.

Sports medicine is a multidisciplinary specialty, which is reflected in the content and attendance at the symposium. The two-day event featured lectures and discussions on topics such as rotator cuff disorders, mental health in athletes, ankle injuries, cartilage repair options, and pain management for sports medicine patients. With approximately 225 attendees ranging from athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports medicine specialists, and surgeons, the conference was deemed a huge success.

Planning is underway for next year's 39th annual event. We hope you can join us in Iowa City. Keep a lookout for the sports medicine flyer in the months to come.
