The Dr. Arthur Steindler Chair in Orthopedic Surgery

Joseph A. Buckwalter IV, MS, MD

The Dr. Arthur Steindler Chair in Orthopedic Surgery fund was established in 1984 as the Arthur Steindler Fund to support a lectureship presented every other year at the combined meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. However, the fund was changed to an endowed chair in 2002 after several alumni and donors made contributions in honor of Dr. Steindler’s history within the department.  The fund was established to provide support to a faculty member in the Department of Orthopedics and to support the Steindler Lecture.

Dr. Arthur Steindler was the founding professor of Orthopedics at the University of Iowa.  In 1913, the president of the University of Iowa, John Bowman, appointed Dr. Steindler as Instructor in Orthopedics at the age of 35.  He directed its growth for more than a third of a century, making the University of Iowa an international center for orthopedic research, teaching and clinical care.

Dr. Joseph Buckwalter currently holds the Dr. Arthur Steindler Chair in Orthopedic Surgery.
